Community leadership development programs are used nationwide to assist in strengthening and developing strong and productive community leaders. In 2000, representatives from the Millbrook, Tallassee and Wetumpka Area Chambers of Commerce met with educators at the Elmore County office of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System to design a Leadership program that would fit the needs of Elmore County residents. The Leadership Elmore County program began in September of 2001 with a class of 20 individuals. The program begins each year in September with a mandatory overnight retreat designed to help classmates develop a bond through the use of team-building exercises. Attendance at a minimum of seven of the nine full-day sessions is required. Each year the class is also required to select, develop and execute a class project. The program concludes in May with the class graduation.
